The program can be run on either the Microsoft Windows or Linux operating systems.

Because it operates in a 3D environment, the software needs an OpenGL-capable graphics card.NetShrVar is an EPICS support module that can export National Instruments Network Shared Variables as EPICS process variables. Versions 9.0 and 10.x of Multisim are compatible with Windows XP while newer editions work fine with Windows 7 and Vista. Students achieve their learning objectives with PCBs earlier in the process when they combine intuitive analysis and visualization with an electronic circuit simulation. Multisim exports and imports schematics of the printed circuit board into and from Ultiboard, which offers a three-dimensional view of the PCB layout to students before it's exported. NI Multisim has incorporated the layout software NI Ultiboard into its suite of learning tools. This teaching tool builds expertise in all areas of electronic circuit education through practical application of concepts and methods learned in the classroom.

National Instruments developed Multisim as an industry-standard circuits training and SPICE simulation environment for designing, prototyping, and testing electronic schematic designs. Files with MS8 format can be opened with NI Circuit Design Suite 11 and National Instruments Multisim in Microsoft Windows platforms. It also offers compatibility of component browser with MS Excel and components in circuit can be automatically saved to the parts database. Circuit wizard knows when user wants to wire so it changes to a crosshair or use “QuickStart1.ms8” from the “Samples\QuickStart” folder.

Multisim 8 software includes “real” Virtual Instruments from Tektronix, powerful time-saving function, simulation profiles Tool-tip Style Notes, model makers, new worst case algorithms and new amplifier circuit wizard. The National Instruments Electronics Workbench Group (formerly Electronics Workbench) provides the PCB designer with tools for schematic capture, interactive circuit simulation with SPICE, board layout with auto routing options, and integrated prototyping and test. It serves as storage for programmable logic design schematics. The MS8 file extension is a data file known as the Multisim 8 DesignCircuit File which was designed by National Instruments Corporation.
